Markt POS vs. Toast:
Which is best for neighborhood grocery stores and markets?

Toast established itself as a specialized point of sale (POS) system for full-service restaurants, giving floor managers a user-friendly way to manage menus and tables. They’ve recently branched out to retail POS systems, including aggressive marketing toward grocery stores and bottle shops.

On the other hand, Markt POS was built specifically for grocery stores and food markets, and steadily adds features for grocerants and other businesses that combine traditional retail with fresh food sales.

Toast and Markt both have fresh food sales in their DNA, but which is a better fit for neighborhood grocery stores?

Here’s what you need to know about both systems.

At a glance

Toast

Excels in full-service restaurants but limited grocery functionality

Toast was designed from the ground up for food service, and it’s still widely regarded as one of the best systems in the industry. The same can’t be said for retail — grocery, in particular. Many of the workflows and features needed to run a grocery store aren’t natively built into the app, and require a paid add-on or custom workaround.

If your market functions primarily as a restaurant with a small retail section, Toast is a good option.

Markt POS

Designed specifically for grocery stores and hybrid food markets

Markt POS was created with nonstandard inventory, weight-based sales, department-based tracking, and other market-specific features in mind from the start. Markt POS also offers menu creation, kitchen printing, and other quick-service restaurant (QSR) features, though they’re not as advanced as Toast.

If your business is a grocery, deli, butcher, or market first and restaurant second, Markt is the right option for you.

Toast made a lot of promises on how it would help our business out, which we later found out was not necessarily the case.

Toast: Pricing

Hardware

Toast states you must use approved hardware to run their software, with touchscreen panels costing around $1,200 each. Used hardware bundles on sites like eBay will cost you anywhere between $500 and $800. Toast also mentions in their FAQs that they have the right to periodically change their mind about what hardware they support.

In other words, if you’re not buying hardware from Toast directly, you risk losing support down the line.

For weight-based sales, Toast integrates with popular deli and scanner scale brands like Magellan and CAS, but you’ll need to buy them through third-party sellers.

Markt POS: Pricing

Hardware

Markt POS is compatible with a wide range of popular hardware, but we offer hardware bundles with our Growth and Premium plans, too. These hardware bundles come with a two-year warranty. We also offer optional peripherals like scanner scales, deli scales, and label printers at a discount to Markt POS customers.

Watch out: Long-term contracts, cancellation fees, and paid add-ons

Toast’s retail plans start at $90/month — and “starts” does the heavy lifting in that statement.

Many of the features grocery stores need to function, like advanced inventory management or weight-based sales, are only available as paid add-ons. This spikes the cost quickly, especially if you run multiple lanes. After getting hardware and setting up the add-ons, plans run closer to $200 or $300/month.

Important note:

Toast is one of the few POS companies that requires a long-term contract (usually two to three years), with some users and reviews mentioning expensive cancellation fees if you want to make a switch. Some customers also tell us that Toast routinely raises its card processing rates.

We have a very dynamic inventory. We don't have a menu that's laminated that gets passed out to people. It changes every day — it'll change several times this week — so the ability to easily put inventory into the system is very important.

Markt POS or Toast:
Which should you choose?

Ultimately, Markt POS and Toast serve two very different types of businesses. Here are our final thoughts.

Toast makes sense if you:

  • Run a business primarily focused on food service.
  • Need a system that seamlessly integrates with online food delivery services.
  • Need only basic retail and don’t mind paying for add-ons.
  • Don’t heavily rely on weight-based or bulk sales.

Markt POS makes sense if you:

  • Run a grocery store or market with or without prepared food sales.
  • Have a deli counter or need to sell items by weight with embedded barcodes.
  • Want to use a grocery store POS without any long-term contracts.
  • Need a system with grocery-specific inventory and vendor management built in.

See what a system designed for grocery stores can do

Toast is a great system for restaurants, but it’s not built for grocery stores. See why over 1,000 independent markets trust Markt POS to run their business.

FAQs: Toast vs. Markt POS

Is Toast POS designed for grocery stores?

No. Toast started as a solution for full-service restaurants. They recently expanded into general retail (including grocery stores) in the last six months or so, but are not designed specifically for the industry.

Does Toast accept EBT payments?

Yes, Toast supports EBT payments through a third-party payment processing partner named Forage.

Can I use Toast POS hardware with other POS systems?

Generally speaking, no. Toast sells a mix of proprietary and recommended hardware, most of which only work with Toast POS. If you decide to switch, you’ll have to sell your old hardware stack.

Can you do weight-based sales using Toast?

Toast supports integrations with scanner scales but has limited weight-based sales support. Notably, they do not currently support printing embedded barcodes.
