Grocery POS comparison

Vori vs. Markt POS:

What an independent grocer actually pays, and what they actually get.

Vori is a venture-backed grocery POS pitched as an "AI-native, autonomous supermarket" platform. Software is priced per lane, with multi-year contracts and annual rate increases.

Markt POS is a grocery POS built for independent markets, international grocers, butcher shops, and specialty food stores. Flat monthly pricing covers every lane in your store. No long-term contract. 24/7 in-house phone support.

Here's how the two stack up on pricing, contracts, support, and the workflows independent grocery stores actually use every day.

Section 01 - THREE OWNER MOMENTS

3 moments after the demo

The quote, the renewal, and the Sunday support call.

Scenario 01

The quote

You ask both vendors for a quote on a three-lane setup. Same store, same volume, same week.
Markt POS path

The number lands on the same day. Software starts at $49 a month and tops out at $199 for Premium, covering all three lanes on one bill. Hardware is bring-your-own or 70% off direct. Setup, inventory import, and training are included in every plan.

Vori path

Per a recent customer Order Form, Vori's three-lane setup lists at $26,500 upfront: $20,150 for hardware, plus $6,350 for training, installation, travel, shipping, and a site audit. A typical new-customer discount package brings the net to ~$7,800 paid, plus $750 a month from day one.

Verdict

Markt POS quotes one number you can act on. Vori quotes a list you negotiate, with $7,800 still due before your first transaction.

Ask Vori for a written copy of every line item, including training hours, travel, shipping, and the site audit fee.

Scenario 02

Year two

Fourteen months in. The renewal notice arrives.
Markt POS path

No long-term contract. No rate-increase clauses. You can cancel, downgrade, or stay at the same rate you started with. Your bill in month 14 looks exactly like your bill in month two.

Vori path

Per Vori's customer order forms: "After the pricing lock-in period ends, expect payment rate and monthly service fee increases not to exceed 10% per annum." On a $750 monthly software bill, that's an extra $75 a month and ~$900 over the next year. If you leave, Vori will retrieve the hardware and refund your initial deposit minus depreciation.

Verdict

Vori's rates rise on a contractual schedule. Markt POS' don't.

Ask to see the full lock-in terms and the depreciation schedule before you sign.

Scenario 03

Sunday support

It's 7:14 AM on a Sunday. Your front register won't open the drawer. The morning crowd starts at 8.
Markt POS path

Markt POS support runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in-house and US-based. You call, a person picks up, and you're back online before the morning rush.

Vori path

Per Vori's published support hours, the team runs 7 AM to 7 PM Pacific on weekdays and 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific on weekends. At 7:14 AM Eastern Sunday, that's 4:14 AM Pacific. Vori support opens at 8 AM Pacific, which is 11 AM Eastern. You file a ticket and open the store on manual checkout.

Verdict

If your lane stops outside Vori's published hours, you wait until 8 AM Pacific.

Ask both vendors for the published support hours and the after-hours escalation path.

Section 02: Control vs. autonomy

Don't replace the grocer.
Back them up.

Read Vori's marketing, and you'll meet a venture-funded, AI-native, "autonomous supermarket" platform.

Read Markt POS', and you'll meet a system shaped by store visits and operator feedback. The bullets below are the practical version of that gap.

Automation-first

The Vori thesis

  • AI-flagged pricing changes that owners approve in Vori's dashboard
  • System logic centralized at the vendor, with limited override
  • Bundled hardware that replaces your existing equipment, on auto-renewing contracts with non-cancellable payment terms
  • The operator framed as a step to remove
  • Workflow built around the platform
Operator-first

The Markt POS thesis

  • Automation that runs only on workflows you've signed off on
  • Manager-override permissions at the register, configurable per role
  • Bring your own hardware, or use off-the-shelf
  • Fully customizable roles with granular permissions for register and back-office functions
  • Workflow built around the counter
Section 03: Markt POS vs. Vori

Where the system meets the aisle.

Four clusters, four verdicts. Compare the categories that matter, what each system actually does, and where it lands.

Section 07 - Which system makes sense

When each system makes sense.

Including when Vori might be the better choice.

When Vori might be a good fit

Vori is built for:

  • Stores that want AI-driven pricing and margin automation as a core strategy
  • Heavy DSD procurement operations with multi-vendor invoice reconciliation
  • Buyers willing to commit to ~$7,800 upfront and $750/month from day one for the automation upside
  • Operators comfortable with vendor-controlled defaults and a centralized roadmap
  • Stores that prefer one bundled hardware/software/payments stack over choosing each piece
When Markt POS makes sense

Markt POS is built for:

  • Specialty markets: butchers, fish shops, co-ops, grocerants, international groceries, organic and natural food stores, neighborhood corner stores, and produce markets
  • Single-store and mid-size multi-store operators
  • Family-run businesses where the owner runs the floor
  • Stores that value contract flexibility and predictable monthly costs
  • Operators who want dual pricing, off-the-shelf hardware, 24/7 phone support, and no rate-increase clauses
  • Buyers who want to start lean ($49/month) and add features as they grow

Want to see the difference?

You've read the features. You've seen the pricing. But the only way to know if a POS actually works for your store is to see it handle your products, your workflow, and your day-to-day.

FAQs

What's the difference between Markt POS and Vori?

Markt POS and Vori are both grocery POS systems, but they're built for different buyers.

Markt POS is built for independent specialty grocers: butchers, fish shops, co-ops, ethnic and international markets, and family-operated stores.

Vori is a venture-funded platform pitched as an "AI-native, autonomous supermarket" system, with higher upfront costs and a vendor-controlled feature roadmap.

How much does Vori cost compared to Markt POS?

Per a recent Vori customer Order Form, a three-lane setup lists at ~$26,500 upfront. After typical new-customer discounts (often a 100% hardware waiver), the net upfront paid is ~$7,800, plus $750 per month on the discounted Pro tier.

Markt POS software starts at $49 per month, with no long-term contract and no rate-increase clauses. Setup, inventory import, and team training are included on every Markt POS plan.

Does Vori have contract lock-in or rate increases?

Yes. Per Vori's customer Order Forms: "After the pricing lock-in period ends, expect payment rate and monthly service fee increases not to exceed 10% per annum." Vori's TOS also describes an auto-renewing subscription with non-cancellable payment terms.

Markt POS is month-to-month with no rate-increase clauses. You can cancel, downgrade, or stay at the same rate you started with.

What happens to my hardware if I switch from Vori?

Per Vori's Order Form terms: "Upon contract termination, Vori will retrieve all supplied hardware, devices, and equipment, while the Customer will receive a refund of the initial deposit paid for licensing these physical goods. The refund will be determined by deducting depreciation and any damages from the initial value."

So Vori takes the hardware back when you leave, and your refund is whatever's left after depreciation.

Markt POS hardware is bring-your-own or purchased outright. You own what you bought.

Does Markt POS support deli scales, EBT, and eWIC?

Yes to all three. Markt POS integrates with deli scales from Hobart, Ishida, and CAS and supports EBT, SNAP, eWIC, and in-lane self-checkout.

Vori publishes general scale and EBT/eWIC support on its homepage, but does not name specific scale hardware partners.

What's the difference in support hours between Markt POS and Vori?

Markt POS runs 24-hour, 7-day phone support in-house.

Vori offers phone support from 7 AM to 7 PM Pacific on weekdays and from 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific on weekends, with AI-driven chat available 24/7.

For Eastern-time stores, the practical difference is real: Vori's earliest weekend support hour starts at 11 AM Eastern.
